HEY BOOMER! This is Episode 3 of the Boomer Career Guide Podcast and we’re building up steam to sail through the SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS TO A CAREER BOOST AT ANY AGE.
Today I want to share with you why I’m convinced that Our Age (yours and mine) is an Asset, not an Anchor!.....AND that conversation starts….right now!
Hello and Heads up, Fellow Boomer! Welcome to BCG-003, just a little conversation between you and me. As I indicated in the introduction, we’re going to cover a few key points that will hopefully get you excited about stepping up your game and boosting your career.
We’ll first be talking about the value of being Boomer. The points we’ll make today, we’ll build upon and I’ll continue to remind you, until you are comfortably settled into your future DREAM JOB.
It deserves repeating that:
YOUR AGE IS AN ASSET, NOT AN ANCHOR., Boomer!
Whether you realize it or not, right this minute, there are many employers in active search mode looking for the likes of you. They are actively seeking the value in your history and the potential in your past performance.
As I’ve mentioned in previous episodes, I have participated in and studied the job search process from inside and out for the past 40 years. During that time, I have incrementally boosted my own career a number of times. Over the years, I have helped many search weary applicants to upgrade their expectations and to ace their Dream Job searches by using a unique process, one that is laser focused, time tested and simple to duplicate.
Our objective is pretty simple, really. Together we are going to work to identify your unique selection of Dream Jobs. Once you’ve done that, we’ll personalize you plan to connect you with the Decision Makers in those note worthy organizations, to determine whether or not they actually stack up to your expectations.
This time around, we want to make it perfectly clear that you should be the decision maker in this process. Which means you have a right to have choices and make for yourself the important decisions that will lead to your next and possibly best Career Boost yet, like mine, a couple of years ago at the age of 64 ½!
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BOOMER, Many employers do actually realize that while being young, recently educated and IT proficient is a winning combination, it’s just not the solution for every situations and certainly not for every job assignment.
For many potential hiring decisions, youth and a fresh diploma, alone, are simply not the deciding factor, nor the most valuable skill set.
It’s important to remember that just as there are millions of Boomers who share your birthay, many of those same Boomers happen to be Bosses. So, as a result, a growing number of employers, whether born Boomers or before, would prefer to hire someone who has experienced the trials of real life and survived. Somebody like you, for example.
Quoting Mark Twain, “Some people get an education from college. The rest get it when they get out into the world.“ ...and whether you were educated in a university, in the college of life or both, you bring noteworthy experience and talents to the table.
Also, looking at the opportunities from another angle, many younger job seekers will soon discover, if they haven’t already that there’s a Catch 22 on their end of the scale, as well. They will find that you need experience to get a job and a job to gain experience.
Now with that in mind, the playing field may immediately seem a bit more level. In fact, when you really think about it, you are not really in competition with those younger, recent graduates, anyway.
I mentioned that, briefly in episode one, but let’s look a little closer into the value of hiring both Boomers and Beginners.
I’d like to suggest that, YOU REALLY SHOULDN’T LOOK AT A JOB SEARCH AS YOUNGER VS. BOOMER
The Up-and-Comers, have chosen and prepared for a specific path that doesn’t necessarily require your experience. At the same time, you will be targeting assignments that demand both your expertise and your Boomer work ethic, neither of which have been mastered by your younger counterparts.
While you may not be convinced that your value is apparent to employers, let’s take a brief look in your CAREER-VIEW MIRROR. We’ll do a more thorough deep dive in an upcoming exercise and work book, but for now, let’s compare historical apples to apples with your perceived nemesis, the recent college grad.
Let’s break down that comparison of ASSETS VS. ANCHORS and see how you stack up to the younger, future Associates.
By virtue of your extensive “BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT” list, you come pre-loaded with many valuable attributes. Some refer to this as the lessons learned in the School of Hard Knocks.
For example, let’s consider a few questions that look at some of the most obvious assets in your arsenal. Keep in mind that even some of your long forgotten experiences still contribute to your personality and to your potential.
Let’s consider, briefly, a few questions…..and…. Don’t think too hard on the answers, we’ll work on those in detail in upcoming sessions and in our group conversations, but for now, consider these:
If you took a moment, could you possibly create a list of some of your noteworthy job related learning opportunities from your past?:
AHA / LIGHT BULB MOMENTS
When you think about that, there’s so much you’ve done that it really would take a bit of thought to recall everything you’ve learned and experienced in your lifetime. Hold that thought and consider…..
If you were to dig deep into your past, could you possibly recall some experiences where you might say to yourself:
“If I knew then, what I know now, I would have acted very differently!”
What are the chances you’d recall…:
I’ll bet you can think of one or two scenarios that would have you saying….
And the one most of us have said to ourselves…:
So, are you with me here. Can you recall a list of things that you could not possibly have learned without being there and doing those things, right or wrong, good or bad in your own history. They all add up to valuable life lessons that you can’t get from a book or an online course.
Do you see what I mean about the fact that you bring a lot of information to the table.
Let’s try one more, QUESTION 3:
Here’s my favorite that drives the point home:
Thinking back on your life, do you remember challenges that shaped your personality and your life :
From, say, a decade ago?
SO HERE’S MY POINT:
Think about the images that just popped into your head while you were considering this quick historical review of your own Deja Vu! Now imagine if we asked the same questions of your dreaded younger competition. Their answer when asked about the previous several decades, would have to be a resounding...
“NO! Obviously, my experience doesn’t go back that far!”
NOW, LIFE MAY NOT BE FAIR, BUT…I’LL TELL YOU WHAT, BOOMER…..
I hope you understand that you really do come to the table with the unfair advantage of a 20-30 OR even 40 year head start.
Just to drive home the point,........while you were busy living and learning about life, think about what your younger, future fellow associates were doing in the same time period?
While you were your were hard at work,...
They would have been:
A WHILE LATER, THEY WOULD BE...
Learning to read and write. ...while you were possibly punch a clock.
They FOLLOWED that BY THE SEASON OF ….
Stressing about proms and peer pressure.
A LITTLE LATER ON WHEN THEIR LIVES GOT A LITTLE MORE SERIOUS, WHILE YOU WERE STILL HARD AT WORK, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN
Actively studying their chosen career curriculum.
Just remember this… I’ll post a graphic in the show notes, it’s AN IMAGE OF TIME RACING BY AND ASKING AND ANSERING THE QUESTION: “DO YOU REMEMBER (dot, dot, dot) and the answer is: “THEY DON’T (Exclamation point).
I’ve said it before, but the fact is that your younger future associates, while prepped and ready to learn about life, DON’T EVEN KNOW, WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR COLLECTION OF EXPERIENCES, LESSONS AND SKILLS DEVELOPED OVER TIME and will never be able to be duplicated . SO...BOOM THAT!
Remind me to return to this point when we talk more about your value to your future boss as a Mentor. The ability to “Pay It Forward”, where your experience and work ethic are concerned is absolutely a saleable commodity.
Add that to your list of Assets.
SO, While a younger job seeker may be able to dazzle a decision maker with digital details and technical terminology, know this. They will never have the advantage of your experience.
On the other hand, if you have an interest, an inclination or even an obsession, you can always decide to learn the tech skills that they have by reading the same books.
IN OTHER WORDS, You can always advance forward, but they will NEVER, EVER be able to recover the past. ONCE AGAIN…..Advantage, Boomer!
The takeaway from this session is for you to take the accent off your perceived competition. You’re not shooting at their job assignment, anyway.
As our conversation continues in upcoming BLOG POST, PODCAST EPISODES AND COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS, we’ll dive deeper into those Career-View recollections from your past. We’ll work together to refresh your memory and to add valuable talking points to your conversation with your future boss.
Let’s not jump to the finish line, just yet. HOWEVER...IN FACT IN EPISODE #4 WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT:
BOOMER CAREER BOOST
WHERE WE’LL TALK ABOUT WHY….
THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL CAREER BOOST AT ANY AGE
IS KNOWING HOW MOST BOOMERS AND BEGINNERS BLOW IT!
WE’LL TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING
THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB SEARCH
As we continue this conversation, you will learn to upgrade your the standard job search tools. We will avoid the traditional SHOTGUN SEARCH, used by most job seekers and replace it with a LASER FOCUSED process.
You will discover how to locate and analyze the dream employers that interest and need you. I will refer to variations on a theme, in future posts that will enable you to:
BE YOUR BEST, NOT LIKE THE REST!
YOU ARE THE BOOMER IN CHARGE OF YOUR PROCESS
Your poorly prepared competition will continue to use and fumble the same old tired techniques, leading them to the same unsatisfactory results. Most will continue casting a wide net and hoping, with fingers crossed, to be discovered.
Your process will identify your target employers and inspire them to reach out to you for your consideration. You need and deserve to be the Decision Maker in this conversation.
Now back on our plan to continuously LEARN SOMETHING / SHARE SOMETHING
